Everything, honestlyQuestions? Answered.
The questions everybody asks about bidets — fit, warm water, hygiene, savings, power, and smart toilets. Still stuck? Ask Pip, bottom-right — he's fast.
Fit & install
Will a bidet fit my toilet?
For 95%+ of standard two-piece toilets: yes. Match bowl shape — round (~16″ front-to-bolt) or elongated (~18″) — and model sizing follows. One-piece toilets vary on rear clearance, so check the maker's fit chart. Run the fit checker for a tailored answer.
How hard is the install, really?
Attachments: ~20 minutes, basic tools, no pro. Electric seats: ~45 minutes plus needing a GFCI outlet nearby — the hybrid path (DIY water, hired electrician) is the most common. Our DIY guides include a clip for every step.
Do I need an electrician for everything?
Only for missing GFCI outlets (electric seats) or full toilet swaps (smart toilets). Everything water-side can be DIYed by most homeowners. The GFCI primer has the exact script for hiring one.
Can renters install a bidet?
Attachments: yes — non-electric, reversible, uninstalls in ~10 minutes. Electric seats: yes if the GFCI outlet exists; adding outlets to rentals is a landlord conversation, not a weekend project.
Wash & features
Cold water only — isn't that awful?
It's brisk for approximately one second, then strangely fine. Most attachment users adapt in a day. If you want warm: warm-tap attachments add a hot-water hookup, or electric seats heat on demand with no reservoir to run dry.
Do I still need toilet paper?
A little — mostly for the pat-dry (or the heated seats' warm-air dryer handles it). Expect to cut TP usage by 70–90%. Paper hoarding becomes strictly optional.
How much water does a bidet use?
About a pint per wash — roughly one flush's worth of the tank you already own. That's dramatically less water than manufacturing the toilet paper it replaces.
What do heated seats and dryers add?
Heated seats make winter mornings bearable; warm-air dryers cut TP use to nearly zero. Between them, they add about $400–$600 to the purchase price and require the GFCI outlet. Our top seat pick shows the spread.
Hygiene
How do the nozzles stay clean?
Every pick in our review set self-cleans (and mostly self-retracts) the wand: water rinses run before/after cycles, TOTO adds EWATER+, Kohler adds UV light. A periodic wipe-down keeps the housing and dial fresh — 30 seconds, no tools.
Can bidets help with irritation or hemorrhoids?
Many people find water gentler than paper friction; bidet use is commonly praised for postpartum recovery, hemorrhoids, and mobility challenges. We're not medical professionals — check with yours for personal advice.
Is it really cleaner than wiping?
Water washes; paper smears. Ask anyone who has used one for a week — the converts stay converted. "Fresher" isn't marketing; it's physics.
Money & deals
How fast does a bidet pay for itself?
At our ballpark math (2 rolls/person/week at $0.90), a $59.99 attachment pays off in ~5 weeks for a household of four; a $550 seat in under a year. Try the savings calculator on the home page.
What's the HSA/FSA angle?
TUSHY's Classic 3.0 supports purchase with pre-tax FSA/HSA dollars via Flex at checkout — the only verified pre-tax angle we found. A $198 model costs effectively ~$130–$150 after-tax.
When do bidets go on sale?
Black Friday, spring home-reno sales, and brand events move prices most. Deal Radar tracks year-over-year for watched models — see the alert page.

Smart toilets
Are auto open/close and auto flush real?
Yes — here now, not 2032. Auto lids, auto flush, warm-air dry are standard on modern smart toilets from ~$1,000 up. See the smart toilets page.
Smart toilet or top-tier electric seat?
If your bowl/tank are modern: a flagship seat (Kohler E930, ~$1,300) gets you ~90% of the experience for less of the install. A smart toilet makes sense when replacing the whole fixture anyway.
Do smart toilets need power?
Yes — GFCI outlet. On a power outage most models include a manual flush override (check your model's manual).
